Abstract

ABSTRACT

An inversion process was used for estimating the anisotropy and NMO (normal moveout) velocity parameters in transversely isotropic media with a vertical symmetry axis. The equation of the compressional wave traveltime for reflections shows a nonhyperbolic moveout, which depends on these two parameters. The anisotropy is the main parameter responsible of the nonhyperbolic behavior of traveltime, which is more evident for large offsets, greater than the interface depth. The equation of the traveltime used in this study is valid for large offsets. However, it is an approximation and has certain limitations. Therefore, in this study, the ideal large offset was analyzed for determining the anisotropy and NMO velocity. The least square and semblance functions were applied along with the Controlled Random Search algorithm for minimization of these functions. At the beginning of this study, the functions were applied to a simple model of a shale horizontal layer that shows weak anisotropy type VTI (vertical transverse isotropy) [model 1] and then, more layers were added [model 2], to get closer to a real practical situations. The minimization of the semblance function shows less ambiguity than the traveltime least square minimization. The CRS algorithm was able to converge to the neighborhood of the global minimum for both objective functions, overcoming the presence of local minimums. For the studied model, the best offset-to-depth ratio was equal 2. However this result is not a general rule.
