Abstract

ABSTRACT

The geomagnetic field is extremely complex, both in its morphology and its temporal variations, the physical understanding of these phenomena is not yet satisfactory. However, we know that the field is generated in the liquid metal of the Earth's outer core in a dynamo process. Among the most intriguing features of Earth's field are those related to its polarity reversals, namely the huge variations in their frequency and the apparent tendency for them to happen with more probably along certain longitudes, the so called preferential paths for reversal. We believe that the structure and variations in the core mantle boundary (CMB) are responsible for these phenomena. The evidence for such correlation lies in the surprising geographical coincidence between preferential paths for reversal and topographic anomalies at the core mantle boundary region. Also surprising is the relation between spreading rates for the Pacific lithospheric plates, which may be associated with the amplitude of thermal/topographic anomalies at the CMB, and rates of geomagnetic reversals. We propose a mechanism to explain these phenomena based in the effects topography would cause on the flow, in a dynamo of theαωkind. Variations in the amplitude of topography would imply a reversal rate variation.
